University of London – Computer Learning Research Centre and Computer Science Department. The Computer Learning Research Centre (CLRC) at Royal Holloway, and the Defence Mission Systems Division of Thales UK at Crawley, invite applications from suitably qualified students for a fully-funded EPSRC PhD CASE studentship.

The proposed project will address a very important problem of detection and characterisation of radar pulses when the frequency bands are very congested. In particular, a set of newly developed machine learning techniques will be applied for “de-interleaving” problems, and identification of the radar pattern of pulses over wide bandwidths and long repeating patterns. One way to deal with these problems is to apply recently developed pattern recognition conformal predictors that may allow discrimination of different types of pulse repetition intervals.

The scholarship will provide full tuition fees plus a maintenance allowance for 3.5 years, which is free of income tax. Thales intend to supplement the standard Doctoral stipend significantly, for the right candidate. In addition, there will be an allowance to support research studies covering, for example, travel and subsistence for meetings and conferences, books and computing facilities. Due to the restrictions imposed by the scholarship scheme, this opportunity is limited to UK immediately preceding commencement.

Students or EU students who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 (preferably 5) years EU students who do not meet the residence requirement are eligible for a fees only award. The student will be expected to spend up to several months at Thales UK in Crawley, Sussex, and the company will pay any excess travel and subsistence costs. For further information, please contact Prof. A.Gammerman (mailto: A.Gammerman @cs.rhul.ac.uk) and Mr.P.Davies (Paul.Davies@uk.thalesgroup.com)

University of Cambridge Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology – Carbon laydown or ‘coking’ is usually thought of as having a negative effect on catalyst performance. Recent work has shown that this need not be the case. This project seeks to explore how formation of carbonaceous overlayers can be used in petrochemical refining technology, particularly with respect to alkylation, hydrogenation and isomerisation. The team will work on a range of problems including: (i) synthesis of novel metal organic framework solids (MOFs) and related materials; (ii) evaluation of the catalytic performance of these materials at bench scale and in pilot plant; (iii) characterisation of the materials and identification of the role of carbon deposits on catalytic performance.

This studentship will focus on using electron microtomography techniques to image directly the location of carbon within the pore structure of the catalyst and relate this to catalytic performance. business grants. This 3-year PhD studentship is available to start as soon as possible but no later than April 2011. The studentship is open to UK and EU nationals and the project is sponsored by the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals.

Applicants should have a First Class (or high 2:1) degree in a relevant discipline such as chemical engineering, engineering, chemistry or physics. In the first instance, applicants should send a detailed curriculum vitae (to include numerical details of grades obtained in relevant examinations) to: the Research Secretary at recruitment@ceb.cam.ac.uk

Informal enquires about the project may be made to Dr James McGregor via e-mail: jm405@cam.ac.uk
Quote Reference: NP07094, Closing Date: 30 September 2010. The University values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity.
